Otomax – 15 Gm

Otomax® is indicated for the treatment of canine acute and chronic otitis externa associated with yeast (Malassezia pachydermatis, formerly Pityrosporum canis) and/or bacteria susceptible to gentamicin.

Otomax^® is an otic antibiotic steroid that is effective against acute and chronic ear infections (otitis externa) associated with yeast and bacteria in dogs. Helps reduce discomfort, redness, swelling, exudate and odor. By virtue of its three active ingredients, this product has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal activity. The colorless ointment makes it easy to evaluate the infection. This product has the prolonged contact time of an ointment for effective treatment and relief, plus the consistency of a solution for complete infection coverage.

Contraindications: If hypersensitivity to any of the components occurs, treatment should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted. Concomitant use of drugs known to induce ototoxicity should be avoided. Do not use in dogs with known perforation of eardrums.

Toxicology:
Clinical and safety studies with Otomax^® OTOMAX ointment have shown a wide safety margin at the recommended dose level in dogs.

Side Effects:
Gentamicin: While aminoglycosides are absorbed poorly from skin, intoxication may occur when aminoglycosides are applied topically for prolonged periods of time to large wounds, burns, or any denuded skin, particularly if there is renal insufficiency. All aminoglycosides have the potential to produce reversible and irreversible vestibular, cochlear, and renal toxicity.
Betamethasone: Side effects such as SAP and SGPT enzyme elevations, weight loss, anorexia, polydipsia, and polyuria have occurred following the use of parenteral or systemic synthetic corticosteroids in dogs. Vomiting and diarrhea (occasionally bloody) have been observed in dogs and cats. Cushing’s syndrome in dogs has been reported in association with prolonged or repeated steroid therapy.
Clotrimazole: The following have been reported occasionally in humans in connection with the use of clotrimazole: erythema, stinging, blistering, peeling, edema, pruritus, urticaria, and general irritation of the skin not present before therapy.

Warnings:
For otic use in dogs only. May result in temporary hearing loss. If hearing or vestibular dysfunction is noted, discontinue use immediately and flush with a nonototoxic solution.
Use extreme caution when administering to pregnant or breeding animals.

Precautions:
Avoid oral ingestion. Examine ear canal carefully for rupture before instilling any medication into the ear. If allergic reactions occur, discontinue use and see your veterinarian.

Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

Disposal of Unused Prescription Medications

1. Return unwanted or unused medications to Revival Animal Health in person, or visit www.disposemymeds.org to find a pharmacy near you.
2. A secondary method of drug disposal is to remove the unwanted medication from any wrappers or containers and place it in a plastic bag with moist coffee grounds or cat litter. This can be disposed of in the regular garbage collection.
3. Please do NOT dispose of unwanted meds down the drain or toilet, as this may eventually find its way into the human water supply.

Disposal of Medical Sharps

1. When you’re finished with the syringe and needle, do not try to recap, remove, bend or break the needle. This is where most injuries occur.
2. Dispose the syringe and needle immediately in a nearby sharps container. All sharps must be deposited in a puncture-proof container. Make sure your storage location is child and animal proof.
3. As with all product handling, make sure you wash your hands after handling medical sharps.

Disposal of Sharps Container

1. When your sharps container is half-full, sift dry Portland Cement throughout the sharps. Fill the container with water, and rotate until the cement is mixed and the sharps have been distributed throughout the cement mixture. Let cement dry for 24 hours.
2. Seal the lid of the container tightly and use duct tape to seal. Label the container “Livestock Sharps” to properly identify the contents.
3. Dispose of the containers in accordance with your state’s regulations.
